The Medieval period was the Golden Age of swords and swordsmanship. Just before the development of practical firearms, all combat, military or otherwise was conducted with the stately and highly skilled practice of swordplay. Blades of this period took on every size and shape. The rapier adapted to improved armor by becoming slender and agile, while the broadsword remained a large and fearsome weapon on the battlefield.

Legendary blades such as King Arthur’s Excalibur began to emerge in this period, as well as swords wielded by towering historical figures such as Richard the Lionheart and Robin Hood. In Scotland, William Wallace struck a blow for independence with his mighty claymore while the crusaders and the Knights Templar fought their way across Europe.
