Nodachi

A nodachi is a large two-handed Japanese sword. The rough translation means "field sword". Nodachi were typically carried by foot soldiers to use against opposing cavalry. Unlike the katana or wakizashi, nodachi were worn across the back instead of at the waist. The blade was usually around four feet long. Its cutting capability and range exceeded that of a katana, due to its weight and size.

In ancient Japan, private duels between individuals were not uncommon, and what better way to show off one’s dueling prowess than with an over-sized, two-handed longsword of intimidating proportions? Nodachi were blades that were much longer and heavier than the traditional katana, making them a formidable weapon indeed, but also quite difficult to wield expertly. Therefore, the possession of such an item was seen as a symbol either of great wealth or extreme proficiency in battle. Additionally, Nodachi were notoriously difficult to forge and were sometimes made as proof of swordsmith’s great skill.

We are pleased to offer a variety of these impressive weapons, extending to massive sizes of nearly six feet for the ultimate in range and power.
