Description

Zatoichi - Sword of the Blind Swordsman

The legendary tales of the fictional blind swordsman come to life in your hands with this simple shikomi-zue, or cane sword, carried during a time of the Edo Period when katanas were forbidden to be used by non-bushi (samurai).

The thinking was that the cane sword could not compete with a true katana, but Zatoichi proved that idea wrong. Slender and meek, the power of this straight sword came from the wielder's unusual skill and intuition.

The blade is made of carbon steel and total sword length is just over 40 inches. Wooden handle is modestly designed with three diagonal grooves set into the wood, letting the blind swordsman know exactly where his hand was on the grip.

This sword, like the one used in numerous film adaptations of the story (one made by Akira Kurosawa), looks like a modest walking stick when housed in its wooden scabbard, but can hold its own in actual swordplay. This is the top in understated weapon power.
